But if you’re reading that series or have watched the Netflix shows she’s on, you may be wondering about Jessica’s early days as a hero and her connection to the Avengers. Marvelette Missives – Lockjaw

If that’s the case or if you want a refresher on the best dog in the Marvel universe, the Lockjaw: Dog Days collection is what you need.  More

Marvelette Missives – Clue

Was it Professor Plum in the library with the wrench? Or maybe it was Miss Scarlet in the ballroom with the candlestick. Yes, we all recall the characters and scenarios of the classic “who dunnit” board game Clue. And now, continuing a partnership that brought comic book versions of Transformers and My Little Pony, IDW is working with Hasbro to bring the mystery to life once more with a Clue comic book series.  More

Marvelette Missives – Daughters of the Dragon

Marvelette Missives – Daughters of the Dragon

In the late 70s, a couple of supporting characters from Iron Fist comics, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, were given a chance to team up as Daughters of the Dragon in an issue of Marvel Team-Up. Though well received, the duo remained supporting characters, carrying over to the Power Man and Iron Fist series. They didn’t manage to get their own story lines (in Marvel Comics Presents) until the 1990s and their own title didn’t come out until 2006.  More

Marvelette Missives – Justice League of America (Rebirth)

Marvelette Missives – Justice League of America (Rebirth)

When DC decided to do a reboot of their universe with Rebirth, changes were made across the board. One of the interesting twists was the new version of the Justice League of America. Following the Justice League vs. Suicide Squad miniseries, Rebirth brought together the likes of Black Canary, Vixen… even Lobo.  More

Marvelette Missives – Generations

Marvelette Missives – Generations

Following on the heels of Secret Empire, and a mysterious twist on how that event storyline ended, Marvel has been releasing a series of one-shots dubbed Generations. Beginning in August, this 10-issue anthology series is a collection of team-ups of classic characters with their current versions.  More

Marvelette Missives – My Friend Dahmer

Marvelette Missives – My Friend Dahmer

Anyone over the age of 30 knows about Jeffrey Dahmer and likely remembers the details of his arrest and trial in the early 90s. Even if you’re younger, you no doubt recognize the name of the man who took the lives of 17 victims. Artist John “Derf” Backderf went to highschool with Dahmer in the 70s and in the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer, he recounts his interactions with him, how much of an outsider he really was and how the toxic family environment he lived in had a hand in creating the monster he was to become.  More

Marvelette Missives – The Secret Service

Marvelette Missives – The Secret Service

With the news in early August that Netflix has purchased comic book company Millarworld (publisher of Kick-Ass, Wanted, Jupiter’s Legacy and more) and with Kingsman: The Golden Circle in theaters, it seems a good time to have a post about The Secret Service, on which the Kingsman: The Secret Service movie is based. If you are familiar with Mark Millar’s work at all, whether in the comics or on the big screen, you know the potential levels of violence and general craziness to expect. But in most cases the plot is interesting and engaging, and the stories are well-written. The Secret Service is one of those cases.  More

Marvelette Missives – Happy 100, Mr. Kirby

Marvelette Missives – Happy 100, Mr. Kirby

Last month would have marked the 100th birthday of comic book icon Jack Kirby. For those not as familiar with the history of comics, Kirby was not only an artist, writer and editor, but he created some of the most well-known characters and styles that are still seen in comics today. His first, and biggest, character creation (working with artist Joe Simon) was in 1940: Captain America. Over his career he wrote, drew and/or created dozens of heroes and worked for Marvel and DC, as well as doing freelance work. He was a large part of what Stan Lee dubbed “the Marvel method” of creating comics in a particular style.  More

Marvelette Missives – Secret Empire

Marvelette Missives – Secret Empire

The big two comic book companies love their events and the most recent from Marvel, Secret Empire, just came to an end. The 10-issue storyline followed Captain America’s allegiance to HYDRA, his reign as supreme global ruler, the “heroes” who sided with him and those who opposed his rule and fought back. In the end, as with all events, there was a resolution but not without some changes to the Marvel universe.  More

Marvelette Missives – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Marvelette Missives – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

At Comic-Con International in July, it was announced that the fourth (and final) volume of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen had been completed, though no release date has been set. Written by Alan Moore, with art by Kevin O’Neill, the series began in 1999 as a sort of Victorian Justice League, but with a pronounced literary bent. There are many references (and inside jokes) to Victorian fiction, as well as a lot of steampunk elements.  More

Marvelette Missives – Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye

Marvelette Missives – Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye

The first thing to catch your attention about Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye is, obviously, the title. And yes, it’s a factual statement about the main character. But if you pick up the comic you’ll soon find out there’s a lot more to it than an enhanced human character.  More

Marvelette Missives – Lady Mechanika

Marvelette Missives – Lady Mechanika

If you’re into steampunk at all, you will have heard of the Lady Mechanika series. And if you’re new to the genre and want a comic book series full of adventure (and fantastic artwork), then you need to give it a read.  More

Marvelette Missives – The Defenders

Marvelette Missives – The Defenders

In June, as a prelude to the series hitting Netflix in August, The Defenders premiered featuring Daredevil, Luke Cage Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, it’s a good introduction to these characters coming together in the street level version of the Avengers. Well, sort of.  More
