Now Geek This: Star Wars, Avengers, and Batman Vs. Superman…..Oh my!

nowgeekthisWell, it certainly has been quite a week to be a geek, has it not?  We’ve had a deluge of geekery thrown at us this week, a veritable monsoon if you will.  There has been so much excitement this week, I could swear that the geek center of my brain was going to explode.  I don’t know if I can take much more geeky goodness, but, I am certainly willing to test that limit if any more newsbits should happen to be released.  Now then, let us discuss some of those tasty morsels, shall we?

Star Wars: The Trailer Awakens Fans

Let’s start with the biggest, and certainly tastiest, morsel.  This week, being the time of the annual Star War Celebration event, gave us the release of the latest trailer for a little film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  The movie doesn’t come out until December, unfortunately, and Star Wars fans like myself are gobbling up any tidbits about the film that they can.  So far, much of those tidbits have been just rumor and speculation, but the release of this latest trailer gives us fans some truly meaty bits to chew on.  If you haven’t watched the trailer yet……What are you waiting for!?!  You need to watch it as soon as you finish reading this article!  This trailer is worth watching over and over again, trust me.  I have already watched the trailer several times, and it gives me chills each time I watch it.   In fact, I have watched the trailer an additional four times as I wrote this article.

The trailer for the movie can be found by simply entering “Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer” into any search engine.  Not only will you find the trailer, which is all over the web now, but you will also find an assortment of memes that have already been created, plus, several different breakdowns of the trailer.  I have even seen an adorkable scene by scene Lego version of the trailer.  You can also find a link to the trailer, the Lego version, and many more Star Wars goodies on my Twitter feed, @nesofgeek.  I have been spending so much time on this trailer and all of its versions and breakdowns that I am probably close to suffering a Star Wars overdose.  Oh, who am I kidding, we all know it’s impossible to overdose on Star Wars!

After several viewings of the trailer, I can safely say that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be beyond awesome.  I believe geeks as a whole will have to invent a new word just to describe how great this movie will be.  Watching the trailer gives me the joy I am accustomed to when I watch a Star Wars movie.  Not only do you get glimpses of familiar Star Wars icons and characters, but you also get a better look at some of the new characters, vehicles, and even new versions of Stormtrooper armor, all of which seem to fit comfortably into the Star Wars universe.

Of course, the best part of the trailer, and the part that left a Joker sized smile on my face, was the few seconds at the end.  I have only three words to describe the end of the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and those words are, “Chewie, we’re home.”

In between viewings of the trailer, you can also go to www.starwarscelebration.com to check out more from this years Star Wars Celebration, including panels as well as images from the event.

Avengers, Avengers everywhere

Not to be outdone, Marvel has kicked the promotional juggernaut for Avengers: Age of Ultron into high gear, despite the fact that the movie does not come out for another two weeks.  Marvel has released a few choice clips from the movie online, including a snippet of the battle scene between the Hulk and Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor.  Let me tell you, that is going to be a truly epic battle, as it should be.  In addition, the cast of Avengers have been making the rounds on the talk show circuit, both nighttime as well as daytime shows, including an entire episode of Jimmy Kimmel live featuring the full main cast of the movie.  Exitement is already high for this blockbuster movie among geeks, and Marvel is doing an excellent job of marketing Avengers: Age of Ultron to the mass market as well.  Each commercial for Avengers, along with every interview I watch with cast members, only adds to my already high excitement level.  Avengers is going to be an incredible movie, and I cannot wait to see it!  Some may question whether or not the film will live up to the hype, but I have faith in both Marvel Studios, and Joss Whedon that Age of Ultron will top every Marvel movie, every superhero movie in fact, that has come before it in fun, excitement, and pure enjoyment.  Picking Ultron to be the villain for this movie was an act of pure genius.  Ultron is an intense villain that will surely give Loki a run for his crown as greatest Avengers villain.  Additionaly, the information that has seeped out about Age of Ultron, as well as upcoming Marvel films, seems to indicate that this movie will have far reaching ramifications throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On a smaller scale, Netflix released the Daredevil series last week, and word on the street is the show is good.  I have not personally had a chance to view the series yet, regrettably, so I can’t write a review of it at this time, but the things I have heard about the show make me very interested to see it despite the fact that I am not a huge Daredevil fan.  There is also rumor that Daredevil, along with other stars of upcoming Marvel Netflix shows, such as Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, will appear in one of the future Avengers: Infinity War movies as the team known as the Defenders.  This rumor has not been confirmed to my knowledge, but it would certainly be exciting.  I would even love to see the Defenders make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, but that might be hoping for too much.

Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Leaked Footage

DC comics and Warner Brothers also made a bit of noise this week by releasing a twenty second trailer for Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  The clip features a view of both Superman’s and Batman’s costumes on display as if they were in the Batcave or Fortress of Solitude.  As the camera rotated around each costume, ominous music could be heard.  Seconds later, an image of Superman’s S-Shield appeared on screen followed by the slowly fading into view Bat Symbol behind it.    The teaser was interesting, but was nothing more than a hollow tease essentially.

However, what made more news than the official teaser trailer, was the fact that a longer, more substantial trailer was leaked online.  The trailer, as I understand it, was shown in select IMAX theaters, and the leaked version was obviously filmed on someone’s cell phone.  I won’t divulge much about this leaked trailer, and whether or not you choose to watch it is purely your own decision.  All I will say is that Warner Brothers should have expected that, by showing the trailer so early to a select audience, it would find its way on the internet  Who knows, maybe they did realize that fact, and that might have been part of their marketing plan all along.  Regardless, when the trailer does officially come out, it will give fans a juicy look at the movie that will no doubt drum up excitement for Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  All I can say from what I have seen of both trailers is that this movie seems like it is going to be quite dark.  From what I have seen, the movie feels more like a Batman film than a Superman film.  Considering that I am more of a fan of Batman than Superman, I find that very appealing.  Either way, I’m sure Dawn of Justice will feature some amazing verses action.

Well my fellow geeks, that’s the end of this edition of Now Geek This.  Tune in next time for our next exciting adventure.
