Now Geek This: More Geek Bites

nowgeekthisMy last Geek Bites article, in which I wrote small morsels on multiple topics, proved to be popular enough to make me want to try the format again.  And so, without further ado, here are some more tasty bits of geek for you to chew on and enjoy.  Who knows, perhaps I have found a whole new format for my articles to be written in.  Let’s see where it takes us.Avengers Assemble!

Marvel has released a third trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and if you have not seen it yet, you need to watch it immediately!  Well, go ahead and finish reading this article first, then immediately go and watch the trailer.  Even if you have seen it, go watch the trailer again, it is worth viewing several times.  This new trailer has given us a deeper look into the meat of the film, and by the looks of this trailer, Age of Ultron is going to be incredible!  In this new trailer, we got to see a lot more of Ultron, which is fantastic in itself.  Not only did we get to physically see more of how Ultron looks, but we also got more of a glimpse into his motivations.  The trailer also showed us more about the role that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will play in the movie, which is very exciting.  Add to that some intense fight scenes, including more of the Hulk verses Hulkbuster armor fight, as well as some exciting lines from the movie, and we have a trailer that leaves me counting the days until Avengers: Age of Ultron finally comes out.  If that weren’t enough, Joss Whedon has recently stated that the Hulk will have more of an actual character role in the film, and the excitement builds even higher.  In fact, there appears to be a tender moment in the trailer between Black Widow and Bruce Banner that hints at a possible relationship of some type. I have no doubt in my mind that Avengers: Age of Ultron is going to be an amazing movie.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns

This week also saw the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after its winter hiatus, and I could not be happier.  The show left us on a huge cliffhanger in which agent Skye (or should I perhaps call her Daisy?) was infected by a strange gas that seemed to change her and give her some sort of seismic superpower.  In the returning episode, we see a little more of her power as pieces of a new, mysterious puzzle begin to fall into place.  Now, I know that the show started off slow in its first season, which unfortunately might have lost it some viewers, and that is unfortunate.  However, ever since the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier last spring, the show has finally been allowed to let go and fully integrate itself into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The effects of The Winter Soldier spread into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with Hydra taking over and making life miserable for Agent Coulson and his gang.  This season, we have seen the group try to piece things back together while keeping out of the hands of Hydra, and it has made the show very exciting.  We have also seen the introduction of the Absorbing Man, adding to the shows continuity in the MCU.  Now, we are dealing with the introduction of the Inhumans, another Marvel group of characters, with the discovery that Skye herself is an Inhuman.  I am very interested to see where the show goes from here.  I am also pleasantly surprised to see that Marvel is using the show to introduce the Inhumans when the actual Inhumans movie does not come out for another three years.  I like that they can use the show to familiarize everyone with the Inhumans and what they are.  The only question I have is, will they use any of the major Inhuman characters, such as Black Bolt, Medusa, or even Karnak, in the show, or save those major players for the movie?  I am also wondering if they will show the giant Inhuman dog Lockjaw at any point in the show or movie, but that is a question for another time.

Star Wars: Rebels Season Finale

This week also saw the season finale of the fantastic cartoon series, Star Wars: Rebels.  If you have not been watching this show, then you certainly need to catch up on this excellent series.  I have already written a review of the show, so I won’t review it again.  However, I wanted to talk about the finale, because that is exactly how a season finale should be done.  The episode featured a daring prison break, an epic lightsaber battle, and not one, but two fantastic surprise cliffhangers at the end.  One of the cliffhangers is probably not a surprise to those that have read any recent news about the show, but it does involve the appearance of a fan favorite character that should make next season very interesting.  The other cliffhanger also involves the return of a character that should make any fan of the Clone Wars cartoon squeal with delight.  I am not ashamed to admit that I squealed when I saw this character appear on screen, and it was like seeing an old friend return after a long absence.  The most important thing that this finale did, as any season finale should do, is leave me desperately wanting more.  I cannot wait until next season!

Rest in Peace Leonard Nimoy

On a final note, as you are all certainly aware of, Leonard Nimoy passed away last week at the age of 83.  His passing is a very sad occasion for geeks everywhere, and Star Trek fans in particular.  As the character of Spock on the show Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy was an important part of my geek development.  My father was a huge Star Trek fan, and it was through that show, as well as several other Science Fiction properties, that I was able to bond with my father as a child.  Additionally, as I was growing up, I would try to deal with any situation in my life by trying to think logically about the situation.  Although it was not always possible to hold back my emotions and use pure logic in every situation, I was at least inspired by Mr. Spock to try my best to attempt it.  Leonard Nimoy made some important contributions to the tapestry of my life, and I will forever be grateful for that.  Goodbye Leonard Nimoy, you certainly lived long and prospered, and I will always be a fan of yours.

That’s all for this edition of Now Geek This.  Tune in next time for our next exciting adventure.
