After yesterday’s surprise announcement that J.J. Abrams will be franchise-hopping from Star Trek to Star Wars, fans have been curious about what that means for the future of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her crew. Today, Paramount Pictures tells The LA Times that Abrams remains committed to Trek and will, at the very least, serve as producer on Star Trek III (or Star Trek XIII, depending on your point of view). Can someone do both “Star Trek” and “Star Wars“? Apparently so.

It looks like J.J. Abrams will be the director of “Star Wars: Episode VII,” the first “Star Wars” film under the Disney banner and the first installment of a planned new trilogy, according to reports published Thursday. Neither Lucasfilm nor Abrams has officially confirmed yet, but an official announcement is said to be forthcoming. More

Star Wars #1: Fresh water from an old well

Dark Horse has long been the exemplar of how a smart publisher can make pretty great comics out of licensed properties, even those that might not even seem all that worthwhile to begin with. (Compare, for example, Dark Horse’s first few batches of Predator comics to Predator 2, or the publisher’s Predator Vs. Aliens comics to the eventual films bearing that title.) Certainly the company has had its greatest success with the Star Wars license; if there are any other relationships that have been as long and as fruitful as the Dark Horse/Star Wars one, I’m hard-pressed to think of them. If anyone can get down and dirty in various galactic hives of scum and villainy, it’s Han Solo.

That scruffiest of nerf-herders and fan-favorite Star Wars antihero is put in an Ocean’s Eleven situation in Timothy Zahn’s novel Star Wars: Scoundrels, a tome to tide Solo aficionados over while they wait to see if he shows up in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII movie.
